Low Tech Course Creation Options for All Learners

Overview:

Audience: Instructional Designers who would like to be mindful of creating assessible courses
Responsibilities: Storyboarding, Visual Design, Subject Matter Expert, eLearning Development
Tools Used: Canva, Articulate Storyline
The course was created with a team and my portion of the course is being highlighted here.

Problem and Solution

The proposed audience for this course is unfamiliar with the best practices to allow for low tech course creation. Many instructional designers are unsure how to create for their learners using low tech options, while still creating learning that is engaging and meaningful.
My team proposed a course to share strategies, with instructional designers who are struggling to use more accessible low tech course options. The learners would gain knowledge about three low tech options for helping with course development and begin to implement them into their own course creation practices.

Process

I consulted with my team and we agreed that an eLearning course with a scenario based learning assessment would be the best process for our learners. We then designed a branding board to set a visual style and tone best suited for accessibility, a work-breakdown structure to give the course clarity, storyboards to walk through the flow of the course, and then developing the end project.

Branding Board

The branding was chosen intentionally to address accessibility. The colors are easy to read and the font chosen is one that is easily read on both paper and mobile devices. Additionally we opted for the use of photographs whenever possible to make the content more relatable and realistic.

Work-Breakdown Structure

The work-breakdown structure provides a clear look at the three components of the course that was created. It allows for a logical flow of material to be created and ensures that content is not duplicated within the course. It also provided a logical starting point to create our learning components and kept us accountable to the ideas shared within the course.

Section Storyboard

To ease the transition from design to development, I created a visual storyboard to specify the basic design of the slides and images to coincide. By expressing everything in detail, I was able to more readily create the course in the authorizing tool as well as save a lot of time in the development phase.
