Problem and Solution

After having a needs based conversation with my SME, her students struggle with  finding a real world purpose for using real number concepts including: fractions, decimals, square roots, rational and irrational numbers, and number classification. They need to have reality based problems to solve to allow them to learn about the numbers in a more meaningful way.

Our solution to address this problem is to create a project that will occur alongside the direct instruction from her to give the students opportunities to learn the concepts they are learning and apply them to real life scenarios.

Process

I consulted with my SME to discuss the best format to create the project. She shared with me that they have limited access to technology in the classrooms and would prefer to have the unit components mainly created for hands on use.  I designed the unit to contain both individual and group activities to allow the students the chance to interact with others. This unit is the first one the students do in the school year, so it will provide the students with great opportunities to connect with each other.

The completed project includes:

  • An Instructors Guide
  • PowerPoint slides to be used alongside the daily lessons
  • A group journal to record the information gathered in the daily lessons
  • A mid-unit formative review and a summative assessment
  • A PowerPoint presentation with a game to review as a class
